The size of a terrarium
A Green Tree Python (Morelia viridis) yearling measures about 60 cm.
An adult female measures 130 cm or more, depending on the type.
This means that we can offer both snakes accommodation in terrariums of different sizes, whereby the yearling could of course move into the terrarium size of the female animal.
However, the reverse is not possible.
For me, the question also arises as to whether it makes more sense for a tree dweller to provide them with a high terrarium.
Many keepers of Morelia viridis prefer a terrarium measuring 120 cm long x 60 cm wide and 60 cm high. These measurements are for an adult female.
A length of 90 cm is considered sufficient for the male representatives of Morelia viridis.
As a guideline, the following formula can be found for a terrarium that is occupied by a snake:
| Length 1,0 x Width 0,5 x Height 0,75 |
The individual values are multiplied by the length of the animal (from the head to the tip of the tail).
An additional 20% will be charged for each additional animal that is cared for in this terrarium.
In the example of the yearling with a length of 60 cm, this would be L = 60 cm x W 30 cm x H 45 cm.
This corresponds to a volume of 81 liters.
In the example of the female with a length of 130 cm, this would be L = 130 cm x 65 cm x 97.5 cm, which corresponds to a volume of 830 liters.
This information is not required in Germany by law but is used by many official veterinarians as a basis for calculations.
I run high terrariums for my green tree python. These have a height of 175 cm. The base plate measures 65 cm x 85 cm. This corresponds to a volume of 970 liters.
I calculate the volume because I think this unit of measurement is useful when choosing the terrarium.
A snake that weighs 10 kg will certainly need different housing than one that only weighs one kilogram.
Not every terrarium enthusiast finds the presented formula helpful and sensible.
I think it gives a clue though.
Also important to me is that the green tree python can stretch out lengthwise. But that's my personal feeling.
